The City of Kingston recently selected 4 of our Mettros restrooms for high use areas including Racecourse Reserve. Formerly the Mentone Racecourse and “the Black Caviar of horse racing themed playgrounds” according to some, the reserve provides a very high level of amenity typical of many Kingston parks. Colourful murals commissioned by Council were incorporated in the final designs, providing vibrant, customised facilities that appeal to users of all ages.

Not only are our Mettros restrooms specifically designed for user safety and universal access, their installation is very fast indeed. Click the image below to watch a short time-lapse video of the Mettros being delivered and placed into position at Bricker Reserve VIC.

The entire building is constructed in accordance with ISO9001 Certified processes at our factory in QLD, and freighted to site on a dedicated vehicle. They are then simply craned into place and the services connected. This lack of on-site construction makes it ideal for high traffic areas by minimising safety concerns and inconvenience to the public.

Collins Street is Melbourne’s most prestigious retail address and as of last year the home of Aesop’s Australian flagship store. Aesop is no stranger to having retail spaces that amaze the shopper and enhance ones shopping experience. This design comes from Melbourne firm Kerstin Thompson Architects and has been shortlisted for the 2013 Victorian Architecture Awards.

The design draws inspiration from a gentleman’s salon. Leather, mirrors, copper and black steel have been used to create an old world aesthetic. Responding to the location the design fits in so well with the surrounding men’s retail stores and colonial style buildings.

Let your mind drift to a time when men wore hats and gloves, smoked cigars, and drank port and enjoy these pictures of Aesop’s flagship retail store.

It’s like Room11 can do no wrong. Every design that they complete seems to have a unique sensitivity to the projects location and to the materials that are used. Somehow Room11 always seem to manage the balance between contemporary shapes and the natural environment. This is ARH2, completed in 2011 and located in Tasmania.

The design portrays the idea that the worries of the day should be left outside upon entering the home. A dark clad exterior provides juxtaposition with the lighter timber interior. The dark exterior almost reminds me of the colours that can be found in the distant mountains – enabling the angular shape of the building to somehow seem natural on the land. The main entry to the residence, ‘the entry portal’ works as a psychological threshold where the resident moves into the home, losing their view of the surrounding landscape, and symbolically losing their troubles from the day.

A beautiful concept and a stunning example of Australian architecture.

Much architectural jargon has been lavished on this Tribeca warehouse loft renovation but we just like the look of the cool, dynamic, elongated space.

This is not exactly a cozy home but its brutalist strength fits an old Manhattan warehouse well.

The Inverted Warehouse Townhouse has received numerous U.S. awards. It is the creation of Dean-Wolf Architects of New York, where architect Charles Wolf and designer Eunjeong Seong were in charge of the project.

We like the visible stairs that create a sense of lift and movement upward. We like the large surfaces of brick, steel and glass. We like the visibility between floors and from space to space that solves the potential problem of dark boxy rooms inside a windowless warehouse.

It is an impressive conversion of a loft (of 10,500 square feet) within a vast warehouse that covers the entire lot, leaving no room for outside space, garden or patio.

The main achievements of Dean-Wolf’s work are cutting the roof open to let the natural light in and then using glass panels to let it shine into the dark centre of the expansive structure.

By doing this, they also created “outdoor” space inside, making the residence feel like it has a courtyard. They also created a large garden deck off the main living room.

To open up the key areas of the residence to this natural light, the main entry, via an elevator, is now on the fifth floor where public spaces and the bedrooms, playrooms and study are located. In a more typical townhouse, this “parlor” floor would be accessed through the front steps of the building. - Tuija Seipell

This year’s IMM trade show was even more special and interesting because it was held in collaboration with Living Kitchen and over twelve hundred companies presented their designs in the event and these companies hailed from around fifty countries across the globe.

This event was huge this year and lot of new trends came to light in the IMM trade fair. It happens to be very known fact it is the European design that marks the beginning of all the trends and it is then that they make their way to the United States.

The people who visit this grand event will agree to one thing that it is nearly impossible to take a tour of each and every booth at the fair but it is not a tough job to get a whiff of the most popular trends that the companies are sporting.

The first trend that was clearly visible in the trade show was that the organic shapes are quite popular.

It is a notion that almost every American has and that is that the European design is minimalist and includes only straight lines.

However, what the Americans do not realize is that even the minimalist design can have organic designs and soft curves. This year at the IMM trade show organic designs were seen in almost everything ranging from kitchen fixtures to all kinds of furniture.

Organic shapes were also spotted in accessories for the home.

It seems that every day we come across yet another beautiful example of elegant use of wood.

More often than not, the architects and designers turn out to be Aussies! Watch out Scandinavians and Japanese!

Because this is an assignment they can fully control, the partners were able to indulge in all of their favourite features, They value slow life and harmony with nature.

They also emphasize the various ways in which the residents interact with their living environment – the play of light on the walls and through windows and doorways, the feel of materials and textures, the breezes and airflow throughout the building, and of course, the views and vistas at different times of the day and during different seasons.

The optimal use of sunlight, rainwater and other natural resources, and the selection of landscaping features and native plants that require minimal maintenance or watering, are all part of the owners’ quest for sustainable living. Non-toxic materials, low-energy appliances, recycled timbers were also selected for the same reason.

The result is an elegant, minimalist house that makes us think of self-sufficient Finnish summer houses with no running water, no electricity, no indoor plumbing, yet with all the pleasure. - Bill Tikos

Stephen O’Connor and Annick Houle, partners at O’Connor and Houle Architecture, are responsible for designing this stunning residence in Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Australia.

The Pirates Bay House is an L-shaped, one-storey, 200 square-meter (2152 sq. ft.) home for the two architects themselves and their twins.

Architecture Matters sought to negotiate the contrasting hard-edged urban and idyllic parkland settings surrounding the Stonnington Pound site.

Responding to the contemporary architecture of the existing Pound building and adjacent Stonnington Depot complex, they seeked to meet the projected requirements for sustainably housing the municipalities’ growing population of lost and abandoned cats in ‘best-practice’ accommodation.

The dynamic entry-screen foils speak directly to the Depot’s nearby road-screens in a gesture towards creating an identifiably unified civic precinct, albeit one with relatively unglamorous use. The new screens also better signify the building entry whist also providing a filtered outlook into and out of the cats’ outdoor play enclosures.

The resulting wedge-like, steel clad building, with its relatively simple, cost-effective though dynamic forms and textures sits somewhere between the ‘duck’ and the ‘decorated shed’, seeking to engage, when viewed from a footpath on arrival, a freeway when passing at speed or from a park-bench in contemplation.

The facilities’ environmental performance was enhanced through rainwater tanks providing rain water for the washing of existing dog enclosures and new WC cisterns; sensor-controlled low-energy light fittings; cross-ventilation opportunities; air conditioning system cut-offs when windows are opened; high-performance thermal roof insulation; low-E, double-glazed and externally shaded windows.
