Gnarwarre’s newest residence is a modern rural home created by Lancaster Ash Architects. The home built on the outskirts of Geelong incorporates clever green ideas within a warm contemporary aesthetic. The unique location enjoys expansive views to the east, south and west, taking in amazing sunsets and the ferocious storms that sweep in from the Otway ranges.
The client’s brief was to create a modern home within a rural context incorporating ‘green’ design and features, a window seat for the views and a bath to watch the sun set from.
Responding to the challenges of the site, the house turns its back to the harsh southern elements, framing the views with picture windows. The plan wraps around a central courtyard to the north, a wall of operable glazing allowing protected indoor-outdoor living.
An arbour of heavy timber posts and beams supports a canopy of ornamental vines, providing much needed protection from the summer sun, while allowing solar gain in the winter.
Architect, Daniel Ash says
“The clients love that in the winter months the morning sun streams down the tree-lined driveway into the main living and dining space.”
The house is perfectly zoned to include all the comforts of a modern family while enabling the family space to get away. The fireplace and huge stone island bench anchor the central living zone, the island perfect for family cooking sessions or for friends to sit and socialise while the hosts prepare dinner. A second, smaller kitchen/scullery closes off the mess and provides storage for the produce from the proposed vegetable and herb gardens.
Children will happily occupy the eastern end of the house. Designed especially for kids; a playroom, bedrooms and a large deck together with a clever kids bathroom design which allows separate use of the shower, bath, toilet and basins.
Separated by the living area, the master suite includes a study/lounge, master bedroom with en-suite, walk-through robe and a western facing deck at the opposite end of the house. The en-suite makes the most of a huge bath beneath a west facing window for the sought after sunset views.
The green design is subtly incorporated; carefully calculated eave overhangs, window sizes and orientation beautifully supporting the contemporary aesthetic, solar panels hide on the roof, the worm farm septic and household waste system accessible beneath a deck, and fittings and fixtures chosen especially for their eco ratings.
The practice has a strong green ethos, cleverly incorporating ecologically sustainable design features into modern architecture.
