The Good Residence by the design team at Crone Partners is another example as to why we love homes in Melbourne, Australia.

When it comes to bachelor pads, the land down under is home to some of the best bachelor pads around the world. The area is certainly focused on more sleek and minimalistic dwellings, all of which take on modern design elements. The Good House was designed as a project of simple intersecting and overlapping rectangle forms when coupled together provide zoned areas that have been sectioned off in the home as “boxes.” Although they are separate areas of the design, the team at Crone Partners has ensured that the home flows together seamlessly.

Got give it to Crone Partners, job well done.

HPC Urban Design & Planning (HPC) were appointed as the Architects, Town Planners and Project Managers for the construction of Breezway’s new Head Office at Coorparoo in Brisbane, Queensland.
HPC’s architectural design integrates lightweight construction with large areas of Breezway Altair Louvre Window products, in particular the Altair Powerlouvre Window in a Clear Anodised Breezway Easyscreen Window System with Sub Framing. These Powerlouvre Windows have been incorporated into a smart Building Management System to assist with energy savings in this sustainable commercial building. When combined with upper level mezzanine floors, the showcase of Altair Louvres provide building occupants with a feeling of space and unrestricted access to light and fresh air.
Greenleaf Engineers used environmental and thermal modelling technology to maximise natural light and ventilation into the building for extensive periods throughout the year to significantly reduce the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning.
To help achieve the environmental sustainable design strategy, passive solar design principles were taken into consideration prior to construction, including the orientation and shape of the building, material selection and selection of plant and electrical fixtures.
With land that has its long axis facing northwest, the building’s orientation was perfect for maximising the sun’s natural light and warmth. Heating and the electrical hot water unit were therefore removed from the project, cooling costs were reduced by 33%, and artificial lighting was reduced by 50% through the use of natural sunlight combined with energy efficient light fittings.
To coincide with the development of this innovative Head Office, cosmetic improvements were also made to the factory that was built in 1947 to further improve the appearance both inside and out. Factory roof restoration has been completed, along with a new despatch warehouse, refurbishment of the factory lunch room and amenities.
The new Breezway Head Office was a finalist in two categories of the 2011 UDIA Queensland Boral Awards for Excellence; ‘Small Retail/Commercial Building under 3000m2′ and ‘Excellence in Environmentally Sustainable Development’.

Breezway was approached by design company, Gloss Creative to incorporate Altair Louvres into the Myer Marquee (named ‘The Butterfly House’) at Flemington Race Course for the 2011 Spring Carnival in Melbourne.
This opportunity presented itself to be one of the most valuable experiences for Breezway due to the large volume of exposure our Altair Louvres received by the Media and by high profile Celebrities from around the country and overseas.
Altair Louvres in an Anodic Bronze Satin Easyscreen Frame with colour matching clips and handles were installed out the front of the Myer Marquee as a feature wall with a combination of clear glass and aluminium blades. Internal louvres were also creatively displayed with clear glass blades at the back of the Marquee. The Butterfly House was decorated beautifully by Gloss Creative with static butterflies strategically placed around the Marquee and included a lovely display of flowers by world renowned florist Jeff Leatham. All this was creatively captured in the images attached by Architectural Photographer, Marcel Aucar.
The Marquee was featured on numerous Australian Television Channels including the ABC, 7, 9 and 10 with air time on all major news programs as well as Today Tonight, A Current Affair, Sunrise and the Today Morning Show.

On 2nd February 2011, North Queensland experienced one of the largest and most horrific cyclones in Australian history. Cyclone Yasi crossed the coast as a category five cyclone with ferocious wind speeds of up to 290km/hour that left parts of Queensland in complete devastation.

The hardest hit communities were Cardwell, Tully, Innisfail and Mission Beach where leaves were stripped of trees and the trees were knocked to the ground. Roofs were lifted off houses and extensive water damage was caused by the destructive wind gusts and a tidal surge along the coastline.

The speed and force of the wind from Cyclone Yasi proved to be quite challenging for even the most cyclone-rated door and window products to hold up under these conditions. However, Breezway was approached by a number of builders commending us on how well Altair™ Louvre Window Systems lived up to their reputation and were among some of the most durable products that performed exceptionally well during this very destructive cyclone.

In response to this, our local Breezway Representative has been out on the road to seek as much information as he can about the performance of Altair™ Louvres to assist with the future design and development of the Altair™ Louvre Window.

Breezway Sales Representative Dean Cooper stated “It’s hard to believe anything would be left standing after the ferocity of Cyclone Yasi but it’s amazing to see and hear about how well Breezway Altair™ Louvre Window Systems have helped prevent severe wind and water damage to homes in these affected areas.”

Breezway Altair™ Louvre Windows are made entirely from corrosion resistant aluminium, stainless steel and industrial strength plastics for strength and durability and are designed to exceed the requirements of AS2047-1999 ‘Windows in Buildings’. This is to ensure they provide the best performance possible from a louvre window.

Altair™ Louvre Windows not only offer great energy benefits with blades that open almost horizontal to welcome fresh cooling breezes into the home (reducing the need for air conditioning), but they also provide the tightest sealing in their class. With an air infiltration rating of 1.5 l/m2/sec (which is 3 times better than the standard required for residential windows) Altair™ Louvres have been tested to withstand positive and negative wind pressures such as those experienced during Cyclone Yasi.

After visiting the cyclone affected areas, Breezway collected the following testimonials from those who have Altair™ Louvres installed in their homes and who experienced the destruction of Cyclone Yasi first hand.

“We’ve been in our house for almost two years now and I have to say I am absolutely wrapped in Breezway Altair™ Louvre Windows. I installed Altair™ Louvres because I love the style of them and really wanted the ‘louvre look’. Now after going through with Cyclone Yasi, I have to say I am even more impressed with them now due to their performance. I have never experienced anything like Yasi before. During the cyclone we could actually hear and feel the sliding windows and doors jumping in their tracks. It was pretty terrifying, but the louvres held up well. I would definitely recommend them to anyone building or renovating a home.”

Wayne Kentish – Homeowner in Mission Beach

“We experienced category 5 winds from the north and south which hit the long axis of our home, but we were very fortunate not to have received any major damage to the house. We are very pleased with the performance of our Breezway Altair™ Louvre Windows which were specified by our designer due to Breezway’s reputation and their energy efficiency. We didn’t even need to install air conditioning because of the natural breezes we can capture through the louvres.”

Ron Taylor – Engineer from Mission Beach

“We installed Breezway Altair™ Louvres simply because they are more modern than sliding windows and they provide great cross ventilation. We saw Breezway Louvres at the HIA home show in Sydney and liked them so much we specified the product to our designer. We installed decowood aluminium blades in bedrooms because they are so easy to keep clean and glass blades in the living areas so we could enjoy the beautiful ocean views. The louvres performed well and we are very happy with them. They are such a great product. We have air conditioning installed but only use it when the wind gets too gusty up here on the hill.”

Julie and Patrick Eltridge bought in Sydney’s beachside Clovelly three years ago, paying $1.6 million for an old house on a sloping block. It was the land and its sea views they wanted, not the asbestos-riddled house. With time a concern, they have to find a way to fast track a slick, uber modern, two-story residence in a matter of months. The solution comes from Melbourne and a firm of pre-fab builders, who custom build them four top end, architect designed modules in a highly efficient, regulated environment. On completion, the pods will be trucked to Sydney in a dramatic, oversized convoy and then crane lifted into position. Another challenging element of the build centres around the demolition and site preparation in Sydney. One of the site issues has more twists and plot turns than an Agatha Christie novel making the new modules look like a breeze.
