The design brief from Melton Christian College was for a double court gymnasium with additional facilities including protected outdoor areas, spectator seating, toilets, change, meeting, staff, store and class rooms. In addition to this, they wanted the building to be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible.
The architect, Damien Summers selected XFLAM panel to be used for the interior and exterior walls, ceiling and roofing. The architect combined this with Rodeca translucent roofing and façade system and some strategically placed glass windows. As a result the gymnasium has plenty of natural light and a high level of insulation.
The facility is able to maintain a stable temperature from summer through to winter due to the high thermal values and continuous insulation of XFLAM panel. It doesn’t require any mechanical heating, considering temperatures can get drop considerably low during winter months in Melbourne.
Windows were placed to maximize natural ventilation and are power operated. The sliding glass doors open up the gymnasium into one large and outdoor area with lots of natural light and ventilation. The building was also designed to collect storm water to be re-used throughout the college.
The end design for the college is an energy efficient building that requires minimal use of electricity and heating. The XFLAM panel combined with the translucent cladding work well together giving an aesthetic appeal within the architectural design.
The indoor facility contains a basketball and netball court, built to Olympic international standards plus volleyball and badminton courts. The second level has lift access to classrooms and meeting rooms.
